Addressing the Opioid Epidemic in Lakeport, CA

Lake County Overview

Lakeport, California is a rural lake community in Northern California in Lake County.  Lakeport is one of the many towns surrounding the world’s oldest natural lake. Lake County has a population of approximately 69,000, with Lakeport representing 5,135 of that population.

In a state of over 39 million residents, it’s difficult to imagine that Lake County has the 2nd highest overdose rate in the entire state. Yet, it does. In 2022, the county witnessed 84 deaths per 100,000 residents, including the recent loss of a high school student.

Community Response

In response to this critical situation, Chief Brad Rasmussen took the lead and developed a comprehensive three-day initiative addressing youth and adults. This project brought together organizations like Overdose Lifeline, the Director of Lake County Behavioral Health Services, Elise Jones, and the Lakeport Police Department.

“The epidemic is going on in our country, our state, and right here at home in Lakeport and Lake County and it’s a serious issue, that’s why we’re here tonight…So, the event is to start the discussion with you to engage the community and try to end the opioid epidemic right here.”

Brad Rasmussen, Chief of Police, Lakeport

The proactive response resulted in a significant impact. Over the course of three days, five middle and high schools received Overdose Lifeline’s ‘This Is Not About Drugs‘ Opioid Prevention Education program. Additionally, Justin Phillips joined an Opioid Epidemic Community Panel Discussion, drawing the participation of 100 community members.

A grand total of 2,910 individuals gained vital overdose prevention and awareness education, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Overdose Lifeline, Chief Rasmussen, Lakeport Police Department, the City of Lakeport, and Lake County Behavioral Health Services.
