REMEMBRANCES

Remembering Ashley

In the moment I am writing this, I am still in shock. I received the news tonight about Ashley’s passing. After a long and well fought battle with the disease known as addiction, she overdosed. The last I had heard she was 1 year and 5 months sober. I was so proud of her, I wish I had told her that more often.

I met Ashley in High School. Her addiction and her struggle does not define her, so I want everyone to know who she was. She was an incredibly smart person who had big dreams. She wanted to go to school to be a lawyer, and she definitely has the smarts to pull that off. In her free time, however, she loved to read, write, and sing. She had the most beautiful singing voice, and she loved to sing for people. Her poetry always potent with raw emotion, she never held back.

Ashley was an amazing mom to 3 children. Her youngest being about a month old before her passing. She loved them more than anything and despite her struggle she fought for them every single day. She never let the world bring her down no matter what happened. She was positive, she was a beam of light, she was support to others even when she needed support herself.

I will always remember Ashley. She was my first Best Friend and the first person who truly understood me. I will always be grateful for the impact she had on my life.

Please, if you know anyone who is battling addiction, whether they are 1 day or 10 years sober, let them know how proud you are. Let them know you love them.
